A content delivery network keeps copies of your static files in many locations and answers visitors from one of them instead of your server. Plenty of hosts now bundle one. Here is who says so on their own page, with the date we read it, and what their hosting costs to start.

What a CDN does — and doesn’t

Static files travel less
Images, stylesheets, scripts and downloads are cached on the network’s servers and served from there, so a visitor far from your data centre waits less for them.

Your server does less work
A request answered from the cache never reaches your server, which leaves its CPU and bandwidth for the pages only it can build.

Personal pages still hit the server
A cart, an account page or a search result is different for every visitor and is normally not cached. A CDN will not make a slow application fast.

“Free CDN” means different things
It can be the host’s own network or a partner’s switched on from the control panel. The quotes below say which, where the company does.

Watch the tier
Some companies include the CDN only from a mid-range plan up. When they say so, the quote says so too — the entry price next to it is the cheapest plan in the line, not necessarily the one with the CDN.

DNS often moves with it
Some CDNs ask you to move your domain’s nameservers to them; others only need a CNAME record. Know which before you switch — and what your DNS host offers.
